Oral health is important to a healthy smile. This means good oral hygiene habits every day, along with six-month checkups and cleanings to keep tooth decay and gum disease away. When you are aligning your smile with braces, your oral health is even more crucial.

Summer Enlow, DDS PC appreciates our patients who are straightening their smiles in Nacogdoches, Texas, and the surrounding communities. While you are aligning your teeth, it is vital to maintain excellent oral hygiene. With aligners, cleaning is as simple as brushing and flossing your pearly whites. With wires and brackets, however, you want to make sure you keep food particles and plaque away to avoid damaging tooth enamel.

Dr. Summer Enlow and our team are happy to share just a few tips on keeping your teeth in pristine condition while aligning your smile:

1- If you wear elastics, be sure to remove them before you begin cleaning your teeth.

2- Start by brushing your teeth. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gums and gently clean the gum line using tiny circular strokes. Fluoride toothpaste is recommended as it helps your teeth resist acids from food and drinks, as well as replacing minerals. You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

3- Then, brush each tooth gently, along with the braces. You do want to thoroughly clean the gaps between the wire and each tooth, as well as under the wires. Patients have found a powered toothbrush effective, instead of a manual one.

4- Next, make sure to clean the inside and outside surface areas of each tooth, and remember to use circular strokes as you go. With the molars, you can brush back and forth.

5- Don’t forget to floss your teeth as well, and oral irrigators can be a great aid to flossing thoroughly.

6- After cleaning your pearly whites, replace your elastic.

7- You will also want to avoid acidic foods and beverages that can harm your teeth and hard foods and sticky foods that can harm your brackets and wires. This means no gum or ice chomping.
